Whiting Community
The City of Whiting is situated near the shores of Lake Michigan in the northwestern corner of Indiana bordering the state of Illinois.
Whiting is a unique community, rich in tradition and civic pride.
The name "Whiting" stems from a train derailment by an engineer commonly called "Pop Whiting." The site of the derailment became known as "Pop Whiting's Siding," until it was decided that the name was too long and was later shortened to Whiting.
Growth of the city can be directly attributed to its being selected as a site for Standard Oil's refinery. The town's population exploded from 25 to 40 families in 1889 to 3,000 in 1892.
Whiting was incorporated as a town on October 1st, 1895 and as a city on May 4, 1903.
